I am glad to say that the first meeting did not end up being Tank and myself sharing a pitcher (Which I feared  ). I think we had seven people total show up and I thought we covered some important topics. I got the feeling from the people that were there, and the people that emailed me but couldn't make it, that there is a drive out there to bring lots more Ultimate to Omaha!
First of all, it was agreed that getting together and having some sort of meeting was worth our time, so we plan on trying to get together, perhaps with more advance notification and a better turnout. We felt an urgency to meet, definitely before April 2nd, as this is the start of DST and probably the start of some consistent midweek evening games. The time/date/place needs to be determined, but we could probably get another deal on pizza at Sam and Louis.
There seemed to be a general consensus, which you should correct me if I am wrong, of the following “big picture� ideas. As goals, the following things were brought up:
- Building awareness and increasing organization in Omaha (it was noted that other larger and smaller towns than this have much more ultimate activity).
- Having at least a summer league and an annual tournament were also desired.
- It would also be nice if Omaha could send at least one team to regional tournaments.
I will break up the rest of the post in the following threads:
1) Pickup games and Private games currently going on in Omaha, and prospects for the future.
2) The playing field situation: what do we have access to (legally and illegally) and how can we get more/nicer ones?
3) Publicity, recruitment, and coaching of new players.
4) Organization (focus on website modifications): Specifically how can our on-line presence be managed to best coordinate games/leagues/tournaments?
5) Leagues: a league will happen this year, how can we make it successful?
6) Tournaments: a tournament this year is desired, how can we procure a field, recruit teams, and organize the games.
7) Grab bag: custom printed Discraft Ultrastar discs, business cards, volunteer opportunities, annual parties…
